I find an old half finished post about Twitter vs SL, and finish it

Blog posts completed after mere 5 year delay: 1 (good)
Had decided to post here for first time in mumble-mumble months, when noticed had 66 draft posts. As had thought, most of them consisted of few enigmatic words or a couple of random pics., but this seemed almost complete, so have decided to post it. Unfortunately forgot to note down when actually drafted it*: think was 2015, though that seems a bit late for 1st Tweet chat. Anyway here it is:

For first time participated in Twitter-only discussion this week. Could not help but compare with SL equivalent so decided to be Reflective Practitioner and blog about it. Was then question of which of my x zillion blogs I should burden with these pearls of wisdom. Thought people would be least likely to read it if I put it here, and hey haven’t blogged here recently**, so here we go.

Discussion was about info literacy, so is pretty easy to compare with some Infolit iSchool discussions. Must start by saying that am not that keen on Twitter. Have blogged about that HERE. Blog I blogged THAT on is more Serious Blog (though with risibly low page hits, but whatever) so omitted to mention key drawback which is that on Twitter no one can see whether you have a kitten on your head. Or your shoulder. Or new spiffy cowboy boots with pink ribbons. In fact you could be a dragon or a dancing cabbage and people still wouldn’t know. Whereas in SL it is all out there for people to see and make merry banter about.

Tried to reign in refs to SL in above blog post, because we all know that people think that people who like SL are, like, weird**, but was thinking how on SL do have fun. In fact in week before wrote Twitter-is-no-fun post had amusing post-meeting banter in SL with Kali and Pancha which started with fact that Pancha was wearing steampunk librarian outfit (lower half replaced by gears). Led to reminicences about when Kali rezzed with no top on and I took pics and then had to promise not to post them to Flickr. Lord how we chortled. You had to be there.

Anyway: Similarities between a discussion on infolit on Twitter and in SL:
1. Can be at your desk/ in bed/ in the pub i.e. anywhere where you have a device and an internet connection:
2. During discussion can nip out to make coffee, take a phone call, have a comfort break etc. etc.
3. You get an automatic transcript
4. Discussion overlaps and is disjointed
5. Technical problems
6. People use [inserted May 2020 use what??? language? a computer? I suppose people will have been using SOMETHING, let's leave it at that]
7. You find out some interesting stuff and talk to new people
Differences
1. On Twitter you get to talk to people who use Twitter, on SL to people who use SL.
2. Beginning and end of session are not so clear on Twitter, though of course could have been Twitter session I was in.

At this point typing had ceased. Presume was through lack of time, but perhaps was so overwhelmed with differences that had to go and lie down.

Anyway, can add some more differences, so, to continue
3. In SL shared digital space is more distinctive, and more likely to be brought into conversation
4. Also in SL can move location
5. Can use Twitter on all sorts of devices, and even when your device and signal are rubbish. Not so with SL
6. In SL can be present and not saying anything, but people still know you are there.
7. In SL people more likely to apologise for arriving late, or for dropping in late and then disappearing. In Twitter get more people divebombing in and out (or perhaps they've been there all the time not saying anything, one can't tell, see (6)
8. On SL saying goodbye and thanking people takes 3 times as long as on Twitter. This is an estimate. If anyone wants to give me money to test this hypothesis, yes please.
9. More likely to get an idea of what was said on Twitter afterwards, as will be able to search on hashtag even if no-one has archived chat. In SL depends on someone sharing chatlog
10. Are more likely to get pics of the SL discussion posted than Twitter discussion, in that - why would you even take a pic of a Twitter discussion?
11. In SL more likely to comment on people's appearance and people more likely to change appearance during session.
12. SL is more fun. It just is.

Hmm, not sure that is unbiased assessment, but this is a reflection, not some nonsensical attempt at objective evaluation. Have illustrated this with pics of some of my devices in SL plus me in a kimono with a small donkey companion, because, why not

Another trip

No. of free kimonos sought: 4 (good); No. of free kimonos found: 0 (bad); No of free sushi meals acquired: 1 (good); No. of leeks acquired: 0 (bad)
Saw on blog feeds that Tenjin region had free kimonos, so teleported over. However, most of blog entry was in Japanese, and doubtless this disclosed detailed instructions of where could actually find free kimono since hunted round vainly trying to spot them.

However, in course of travels ended up with free sushi tray, also colourful globular creature (see pic top right), also strange bats to play some sort of game, also Fortune told at temple which seemed to be saying that my RL was going to go better than my SL and that I should avoid camping. Did not end up with leek (negi in Japanese, I know this because of the series Negima where leading child, allegedly from Wales, is called Negi) as it merely gave system error when tried to vend it to me. My inventory is lacking in edible green veg. so will have to go back to retry that and the spinach next to it. Yum.

Cherry blossom, Daffodils

Japanese sims visited: 2 (good); Cherry trees planted: 12 (approx) (v. good); Kimono bought: 1 (good, or is it)

Is start of cherry blossom in Japan, so have gone into blossom overdrive on Infolit iSchool. As well as trees from Heart garden centre have also discovered ones by 2 Japanese designers, one with drifting blossom, and both also cheap which is always advantage even though currently have oodles of Linden due to land sales. Am shown in first pic with sign have just erected outside Sakura House explaining that Sakura means cherry (blossom).

Also seemed good time to invest in yet more kimono and visit Japanese sims. Am thus shown in 2nd pic in new kimono on the machinima lot in Tennoz Isle pretending to be character in Ozu film, though hair flower is a bit flighty for that. Am currently not sure whether kimono is TOO colourful, it looked nice on the vendor.

Was checking for links to blog, on Technorati, and saw that had been linked & 2 pics on flickr used by someone else, namely the First daffodils blog. So amongst their photos of RL daffodils in various parts of the world are mine in SL. Think this is quite cool.

Kimono, Kitten, Creation, Meeting

Kittens bought: 1 (v. good); Kimono bought: 1 (good); Meetings: 1 (good); Poster created: 1 (v.v.good)

A busy evening. Decide this is night for Creation. Find sandbox, Build, Create, and Edit. Create cone and delete. Then manage to reshape cube into flat sheet. Had previously created ppt slide which says Centre for Information Literacy Research, made into jpg and imported into SL. Now add this as Texture and hey presto, have cool poster. Am v. proud.

Unfortunately cannot yet put in office as can't Create there. Therefore travel to University of Southern Queensland and to take pic (see above).

Whilst back in SL office, contemplating purple wall, IH IMs to say has found kittens for sale. Hurrah again! Teleport over to shop and purchase tabby. Comes with pillow, toy and instructions. Still cannot Create in Eduserv office so off to Abo Akademi to play.

SL Kitten has certain disadvantages e.g. is not soft and furry, and goes strange colours if viewed from too far away. On other hand obeys commands, can be stashed in inventory, unlikely to be run over by car and will not develop picky taste in catfood.

Have not yet named it. Was tempted to name after RL (ex) cat, but seems disrespectful (i.e. to RL cat). Or would it be tribute?

Celebrate return to SL further by purchasing yet another kimono. When get back to office realise that kimono is same colour as carpet.

Oh well. At least isn't same colour as wall.

Have discovered can sit on top of window whenever like. Do so.

Finally, accept kind invitation to meet with IH and CH in Second Nature. Other 2 look v. cool. Really must find way to edit own appearance.

After chatting stand up and discover am balancing on glass table. V. amusing.

Relationship, haori problem

Coursework marked in RL: 0 (v. bad); Kimono, Haori and fans bought in SL: 1 of each (mixed); Clothing bought in RL: 0 (good); Merchandise worn: 1 (odd)

Searched for Queensland re: RL friends at Queensland University of Technology. QUT not there but University of Southern Queensland is, so teleport and USQ (aka "Terra Incognita") proves Bedfordia type of uni i.e. parrots, tropical plants, lounge chairs etc. Presence of shop showing Aussie entrepreneurship but also free stuff, so get popcorn, coke and strange orange merchandise "Phil the Phoenix". Phil has own group on flickr as is USQ challenge to photograph plush Phil in locations round world. Resist urge to spend RL Aus$ on same but take free Phil and Wear him, thus acquiring floating orange pet.

Immediate urge to take pics of self and Phil in various venues. Begin with seminar area on Terra Incognita (see first pic) which overdoes marbling somewhat but has v. good ocean views. Then transport to Cool Sushi Bar (second pic) though disappointment that cannot animate food. Have they not heard of Jumping Sushi (true fact, is sushi so fresh that said to jump with muscular spasm of just-dead fish). Finally hang out on new (I think) transparent bridge on Eduserv Island with fashionable cyclamen coloured seats, would almost match a RL swishy skirt.

Examining pics, Phil and I appear to have Meaningful relationship. Bit disturbing. First relationship in SL with floating orange merchandise. Hmmm.

However, leads to natural urge to get new clothes to show off in Phil pics. Purchase kimono, haori (kimono jacket) and new fan. Transport self to Abo and unpack excitedly. After much faffing about decide must be missing parts to haori, namely top and front (see flying pic) as new flowered kimono shows through. In end remove Back, leaving RGT and LFT sleeves.

Additional fan problem. When WEAR fan, attaches to right hand. Right hand immobile and left hand does rather creepy fumbling. Evidently is putting fan in right hand but animating left. In end ATTACH fan to left hand, which still animates, but fan sort of upside down. Oh well.

Doubtless should Take Them Back and Complain. However in RL am v.v. hopeless at that sort of thing, and am no better in SL. Feel would be marked out as suspicious whiner. On other hand, whole caboodle cost about half the price of cappacino consumed this morning in excellent RL cafe Remos.

Like pink kimono more, but will wear flowery one for a while.
